Why business angels invested in the company HomePort?

As the year comes to a close, we are excited to spotlight the Club’s investment in HomePort, a pioneering satellite data platform created by Sofia-based Sfera Technologies. Backed by five members of the Bulgarian Angels Club, this investment showcases a collective dedication to supporting groundbreaking startups with the potential to revolutionize industries and create lasting impact.

This remarkable deal, recognized as the Club’s largest investment in a single company, was honored with the prestigious “Deal of the Year” award during the Club’s end-of-the-year event. In this article, you’ll discover more about the company, the experience of working with angel investors, and the reasons behind our members’ decision to invest in HomePort.

In the article, you will learn more about the company, what it’s like to work with Angel investors, and why our members decided to invest in HomePort.

At the core of HomePort lies a bold vision: to democratize access to satellite data by enabling organizations to create virtual ground segments tailored to their specific needs. By connecting mission requirements with a distributed network of third-party ground stations, HomePort’s platform streamlines the traditionally complex and costly process of gathering satellite data. This seamless process eliminates the need for intermediaries, allowing users to access the platform via a dedicated interface or API, build schedules, and deploy ground segments with ease.

“Satellite data analytics is an industry that produces answers out of satellite imagery and tailors these answers to various other industries that use them-like finance, oil and gas, agriculture, defense, and many others. There is much potential for solutions that integrate AI/ML to process the satellite imagery, so it is definitely a field to pay attention to,” said Zdravko Dimitrov, CEO of Sfera Technologies. “A completely unexplored niche is Lunar development-materials, telecommunications infrastructure, and in-situ resource utilization. While the prospects for this are very long-term and most companies building in this segment are US-based, every investor and country that puts their money in the exploration and conquest of the Moon has the chance to be the next Dutch East India Company (minus the bad bits!).”

His vision resonated strongly with the Bulgarian Angels Club investors. I appreciated Zdravko’s idea to make satellite imagery easy and accessible to use. His track record and dedication were impressive,” said Mila Petrova, founder of TeamUp Services. “At this stage, the idea and the team are the most important factors for me. My background is far from this area, but I believe businesses looking into space have massive potential.”

“There are so many interesting use cases for satellite imagery across industries,” added Timo Fach, founder of Fach.bg. “HomePort simplifies access to this data, making it easier and more practical for companies to benefit from.”

For Alex Popov, former tech leader at Uber, Skyscanner, and Kayak, the decision to invest stemmed from the opportunity to enter the Space Tech domain. “What got me involved was the exposure to the Space Tech domain and the unique investment opportunity it presented. This is a rapidly evolving field, and HomePort is at the forefront of it.”

Challenges and Lessons from Due Diligence

The journey to finalizing the investment came with its challenges. The biggest hurdle for me was understanding the product and all its possibilities. It’s a very technical field, and I had to ask a lot of questions,” Timo noted. “But it was clear from those discussions that Zdravko is passionate about this project and has what it takes to make HomePort successful.”

Alex reflected on the process: “Zdravko had to adjust to the full scale of the due diligence process, which took time. Aligning expectations among different investors and chasing commitments required effort, but the result was worth it.”

Opportunities and Future Potential

The growing demand for satellite data across industries like agriculture, defense, maritime, and energy underscores the importance of HomePort’s platform. “On one hand, there’s a demand for innovation in traditional industries,” Mila observed. “On the other, there’s an increased demand for timely, high-resolution data. HomePort is perfectly positioned to respond to these trends.”

Alex emphasized the broader implications: “The world is changing, and key topics like climate change, food production, drinking water, and energy will dominate the next 20-30 years. Industries tackling these challenges can benefit immensely from data collected by Earth-orbiting sensors. This is the first practical mass application of space-based technology.”

Rewards of Supporting HomePort

For the investors, the rewards of investing in HomePort extend beyond financial returns. “As this is a new area for me, I really appreciated learning more about this field,” Mila said. “Zdravko is very capable, and I’m happy to contribute with my business and finance background.”

Timo echoed this sentiment: “I enjoyed looking into satellite imagery and discovering this field for myself. I’m happy to support Zdravko with my marketing expertise.”

Alex concluded, “I realized I could use the data in other projects I’m involved with. The cost is still a bit high, but HomePort’s goal to democratize and make data more accessible is exactly what’s needed.”

A Shining Example of Collaboration

The investment in HomePort represents more than just a financial milestone; it is a testament to the strength of collaboration and shared vision. What stood out most was their hands-on approach-sitting face-to-face, tackling problems directly, and leveraging their networks,” Zdravko shared. “Their support has been invaluable to our growth and has helped shape HomePort into what it is today.”

As 2024 comes to a close, this partnership serves as a shining example of the impact Bulgarian entrepreneurs and investors can achieve together. The story of HomePort is still unfolding, but its trajectory is one of persistence, innovation, and promise. The Bulgarian Angels Club looks forward to witnessing its continued success in the years to come and remains inspired by the potential of groundbreaking ventures like HomePort to drive meaningful change on a global scale.
